EMINENT DOMAIN AND REDEVELOPMENT The Plumb Line

People must be treated respectfully.  That which belongs to another is the responsibility of the owner concerning its use and sale.  There are specific and special circumstances wherein private property can be acquired by a public entity for public use.  Some examples are schools, dams, hospitals, roadways, and the like.  Even then, the concerns and needs of the owner must be respected.  It is a rare property owner who, for whatever reason decides to be uncooperative and not yield to the common good.

Redevelopment is a serious perversion of eminent domain and the right of property owners.  Under redevelopment, private property may be acquired by a government body, the local redevelopment agency (RDA), and sold or given to a private party.  Furthermore, the private party receives help from the RDA to develop the property.  The ultimate goal is to generate greater revenues.  Everyone benefits then.  No!  When anyone in a society is cheated, bullied or abused, the very fabric of society is frayed.

RDA’s must be stopped.  I have had direct experience with a RDA.  The Fifth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution must be respected:  “…nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation. As of 2004, 400 of the 478 incorporated cities in California have bustling RDA’s.  How they are used is sinful.  Please help stop this movement.  State Senator Tom McClintock needs your support in this matter.  Your friends and relatives who are oppressed by this perversion of government need your help.

“Thomas Jefferson observed, ‘The natural process of things is for liberty to yield and government to gain ground.’”  (M. David Stirling in California Political Review, Redevelopment’s Heavy Hand, July/August 2004 p. 14.)

Prayerfully cast your vote

I have heard man’s “logic”: “Follow the money.” “Go for name recognition.” “Don’t vote for the best person; vote for someone who has a ‘chance’to win.”

I, as recently as in the last primary election, fell prey to this thinking. Because my God is kind to me, with His grace, I came to understand the error of my thinking.

2 Chronicles 7:14                                                                        Back to Top back to top

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
