PRISONS AND THE THREE STRIKES LAW The Plumb Line
California prisons are a very expensive system for the taxpayer. Prisons are not only expensive to build but also to operate.  Most certainly, society needs to be protected from violent criminals who need prison placement. The nonviolent criminal does not need to be placed in a facility at taxpayer expense, or at least needs a minimally secure setting.  The latter is a much less expensive approach. The drug afflicted need treatment, though are not to be excused from paying their debt to society if this is applicable.  Like the Governor of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee has proven, the drug abuser can be treated and returned to society serving as a productive member of society.  He has demonstrated that treatment while being incarcerated has measurable results.
Programs that have a good success rate need to be implemented.  They include Chuck Colson's Prison Fellowship Ministries, Set Free Ministries, and others.  These programs are provided at minimal cost, and possibly no cost to the taxpayer. In addition, pilot programs need to be implemented on an experimental, trial basis. Research data must be collected according to established criteria.  Results also, must be derived from the application of an appropriate analysis.  The most successful results need to be integrated throughout the prison system while unsuccessful programs are discontinued.

Note:  Research can be conducted by graduate-students eager to find a viable population and the possibility of scientific contributions; research would be at no cost or very minimal cost to the taxpayer.  Students who may be interested in this opportunity may be studying criminology, sociology, psychology, or pastoral counseling, to name a few.

Prayerfully cast your vote

I have heard man’s “logic”: “Follow the money.” “Go for name recognition.” “Don’t vote for the best person; vote for someone who has a ‘chance’ to win.”

I, as recently as in the last primary election, fell prey to this thinking. Because my God is kind to me, with His grace, I came to understand the error of my thinking.

2 Chronicles 7:14                                                                        Back to Top back to top

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
